Mike O'Reilly is married to Christine Narroway MA, a music educator, and we have two adult children, Patrick and Louise, who are creating their own professional futures with our parental support. One is in marketing, advertising & sponsorship management and the other in professional music and voice therapy/speech pathology.
In his spare time Mike is a committed motorcycke rider and yacht skipper or race crewman. Until 2022 Mike regularly raced with his son and other reliable crew on his Farr 740 Sports, named (by someone else) OhReally! After a demonstrably good 18 year racing program, the yacht was sold in just 3 days to a new owner in SA.
He has crewed on larger ocean racing yachts from the Cruising Yacht Club of SA. The urge to sail began back in the mid 80's when he took up sailing with a Laser Dinghy - suggested as a "relaxing hobby" after he retired from competitive motorcycle racing at the age of 34. At first, he learned to swim a lot! Within a year he was trying to go faster than other sailors... and a new competitive passion had surfaced. To gain offshore experience Mike crewed on long distance yacht delivery trips from Brisbane to Sydney, Melbourne to Adelaide and Adelaide to Sydney. Sailing became an obsession that reached a pinnacle with competing in the 'Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race' in December 2008 on the 56ft racing yacht 'Pale Ale Rager'. He has also supported other SA teams taking the Hobart challenge as a safety advisor or as shore support manager in Sydney and Hobart.
Increasingly, he is now taking to his two classic motorcycles, when the weather is good.
Mike respects the person who penned this magic statement: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away".
